The Leopard, an exciting new fully licenced Italian/Euro deli café and meeting place in Leura NSW. Providing a curated range of rustic Italian inspired deli favourites, pastas, salads, fresh breads and retail ready to cook meals. Graciously serving the Blue Mountains Community in a comfortable yet convivial environment.

 

This role requires excellent Barista skill, gracious hospitality ethic, excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, often for long hours. The specific can vary from day to day. 

 

Positional Brief:

  • The main responsibility is to provide exceptional warm hospitality service to the guests of the Leopard.  
  • Pleasant and natural hospitality skills and excellent communication is key in this role as you will be engaging with the local and international guests daily.
  • Key duties include taking guests orders, preparing and serving a variety of hot and cold beverages, including espresso-based drinks, teas, and other specialty drinks, following company recipes, presentation and garnishing standards. 
  • In addition to preparing beverages, this role involves inspecting the freshness of ingredients, cold & hot production, restocking, portioning/dating food, food rotation and maintaining a clean and sanitary workstation. 

Work environment:

  • The team at the Leopard aim to provide an upbeat, respectful and fun environment. However, a restaurant environment will be hectic and noisy, working in tight spaces with others. 
  • Guests can be challenging, so your natural caring hospitality skills must always be on display.  We support a respectful environment. 
  • The work is physically demanding, requiring long periods of standing (up to 3 hours at a time, bending, and lifting items up to 15 kilos. 
  • Baristas often work full-time, with shifts that will include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. 

Core responsibilities

  • Guest Service: Welcomes customers by determining their coffee interests and needs. Educates guests by presenting and explaining the coffee drink menu, dining options, types of services provided. Pleasantly answering the guests’ questions and providing advice according to their personal preferences.
  • Beverage preparation: Prepare and serve a variety of hot and cold beverages, and food and retail items; including espresso-based drinks, teas, and other specialty drinks, following company recipes and standards. Garnishing and presenting all products according to established recipes.
  • Safety and Sanitation: Adhere to all food handling, safety, and sanitation guidelines throughout the work area, restaurant and rubbish/recycling area. This includes proper storage and rotation of food products to prevent spoilage. Strict personal grooming and hygiene standards. Safe food handling techniques as dictated by standards of the NSW Food Authority Safe Food Handling.
  • Ensures that all equipment is operational by following all operating instructions; troubleshooting faults, communicating immediately any mechanical faults and repair calls, providing preventive maintenance, assists leadership team in providing “work arounds” when maintenance issues arise.  
  • Inventory management: Using established procedures, monitor and restock the assigned barista station with necessary food/non-food/packaging products and supplies to ensure a smooth and continuous service.
  • Team collaboration: Work effectively with other kitchen and service staff, communicating clearly, respectfully with a smile to ensure timely and accurate order completion. 

Necessary qualifications

Education and training

  • Culinary programs: A Barista certificate or prior experience highly regarded.
  • On-the-job training: Using validation training provided and all associated forms and procedures, Baristas continue to develope skills through on-the-job experience. Must be able to take direction and communicate effectively with the kitchen manager and brigade.  Providing ongoing advice to the leadership team regarding current skill levels, recipe understanding and operational processes. 
  • Certifications: NSW Safe Food handler certification required, or to be completed. 
  • Familiarity with hospitable telephone skills, office and point of sale software.

  • Barista Skills: Strong barista techniques, coffee knowledge, barista equipment and operation, and recipe comprehension. Able to communicate coffee ranges and explain differences in beans and preparation.
  • Attention to detail: The ability to accurately follow established recipes and ensure consistency in drink preparation and presentation.
  • Physical stamina: The capacity to endure long hours on one's feet and perform physically demanding tasks in a high-stress environment.
  • Teamwork: The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues to manage orders during busy periods. 
  • Time management: The skill to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work efficiently to meet service demands. 
  • Continuous Improvement: Improves quality results by studying, evaluating, and re-designing processes; implementing changes; maintaining and improving the appearance of the store and coffee bar.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading coffee, retail trade, and food service publications; maintaining personal networks.
  • Enhances the Leopards reputation by accepting ownership for role, accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
